One thing we have done is add a new "privilege and responsibility" with each birthday. Many of these chores would fall under the responsibility category of course. Privileges were things like moving bedtime back 15 to 30 minutes, adding a sport to the schedule, getting a checking account/debit card, getting a driver's license, etc. Lots of options.
We did all of the "training" you talk about in the months before the birthday as well of course.
I'd recommend keeping a list of what privileges and responsibilities were for each age so you have an idea of what to require of younger children that you also did for older kiddos.
Anyways, just an idea that worked for us that piggyback off these great chore posts!
That’s a great idea! It makes turning another year older come with extra responsibilities and privileges. I’ll have to remember that addition to our chore rhythm. Thanks for sharing!
How do you manage "as needed" chores--for example, putting away laundry or organizing books--things that don't necessarily need to be done on a predictable day of the week?
Good question...at the bottom of my older kids' weekly chore charts, there's a spot for them to check off laundry since that's a Friday chore. Things like that don't really belong in the daily chores but I still wanted to have a place for them at the bottom. You could add this in each week (just write it at the bottom) or call it something like "bonus chore" where you decide what extra area might need attention that particular day or week without having to give it a name on the chart.
