Yes, eating soup with a spoon while holding a baby is a real juggling act! The method of eating soup that I discovered was genius with a newborn (literally 2 hours old because she was born at suppertime and I was starving) is to drink it from a mug. Sometimes you can get some of the mix-ins with the broth, or once there’s less broth it’s easier finish the rest with a spoon.

Haha that’s a smart way to eat soup in the given situation! I’ll have to try that method next time if I’m wearing a baby 😉

Yes! I still do it with a 6 month old if she insists on being held or worn while I’m trying to eat.

It’s funny you say you felt you weren’t as efficient as usual and I read this and thought “wow, she did so much with 5 kids!” Haha! You should do another one of these soon!

Mollie Donghia's avatar

Haha I think our perspectives shift when seasons don’t look similarly! But yes, I should do another one soon now that we’re through the newborn stage and nearly onto a new school year!

That is truly amazing and exciting! Despite having five children, you manage to keep up with all your responsibilities while still making time for yourself—that is wonderful. Congratulations to you!

Thank you, it’s a balance for sure and a lot of days don’t feel great in this season but we’re getting there!

I love learning about your daily rhythms. I am inspired to have my kids help even more. Also I’m impressed — did I read that correctly? 4 kids share a room and you have a system in place? Amazing Mollie! I was proud of myself for having a routine with my boys room and the girls room. You’re crushing this life as a mama of 5!!!

Haha yep they have double bunks and the 4 oldest kids share! We’ll eventually have a boys and girls room when the baby is old enough. Yes my kids do a good amount of chores but only some of them do them well lol, so it’s one of my summer goals to turn some of them into hard, diligent workers!

I really enjoyed reading this. It brought me back to exactly how my newborn homeschool days at home went. Thank you for sharing!

Yes I’m sure you can relate! Thanks for reading it!

I love this and appreciate your authenticity to open up sharing about your postpartum season in one day. It helps encourage me to take one moment at a time. I’m impressed with how well you’re able to recall every thought and intention from throughout your day—how do you do it?

Mollie Donghia's avatar

Thanks jasmine! I don’t usually do posts like this one but I just kind of wrote the post as the day unfolded so that I remembered all that happened instead of waiting until the end of the day and wondering what we even did! I’m glad it was encouraging!

That's smart for posts like this--write as you go. I haven't done a post like this (yet), but I typically write in blocks of time I have. It was really encouraging!

Thanks! It was actually really fun to think about how my day realistically unfolded and see what this season looks like.

Yes! I love this look at a very productive day. How do moms get it all done? By always doing the next right thing 🧡

Mollie Donghia's avatar

Yes I love that thought!

I nod along as a mama of 5 (youngest 9 months). Way to keep yourself fed and nourished (spiritually speaking) through prayer 🤍thanks for sharing the day and focusing on what matters most

Mollie Donghia's avatar

Yes I’m sure you can relate! Starting the day with prayer and/or bible time makes the most difference in my day! Thanks for reading : )

Such long, busy days...I feel you! Homeschool is no joke.

Mollie Donghia's avatar

It’s a journey for sure!

I marvel at what ALL you do! You think it doesn’t seem productive but it IS and because you’ve had these systems in place with routine and chores, I bet that is helping tremendously! You’re an amazing mom, Mollie! ♥️

This day looks so much like my own days right now. 🩵 We have a homeschooled kindergartener, a three year old, and a seven week old, and rocking the baby in one arm while guiding my son through math problems with the other is exactly what I was doing just a few hours ago!

Mollie Donghia's avatar

Yes you get it! Our baby is just about 7 weeks old too, I hope the transition is going smoothly for you 💕

That's real devotion! If you have early readers (4-7ish), I'd love to give you a free summer of our software to try out. I made it to help my own daughter learn to read.

Mollie Donghia's avatar

Oh nice! Sure I’d be up for giving it a try with my 6 year old 😊

Steven Mitchell, PhD's avatar

I just DM’d you a code for a free summer! Thank you!

Mollie Donghia's avatar

Thanks Steven! I’ll check it out soon!

Thanks for your encouragement Brooke ❤️And you’re right, although it may seem slower than my normal pace we’re still running at a moderate speed because of what’s been taught the prior years…that’s a helpful perspective I needed to hear so thank you!

Thanks Kate! And congratulations to you and your family! I hope the transition with baby #5 goes well! Even though our baby isn’t the “easiest” of newborns, going from 4 to 5 just seems so much more doable! It’s all in perspective 😊
